Probably Stolen Rotate Items: Inventory Controls

Learn to rotate items in Probably Stolen while dragging, organize a crowded inventory, and check controls when a video uses different key bindings from yours.

Quick answer

Pick up the item and keep it held, then press Q or E to rotate it before placing it in the inventory. The current controls reference lists E for clockwise and Q for counter-clockwise rotation, and recorded gameplay demonstrates both. If those keys do nothing, confirm that you are holding the item and check your configured bindings before retrying. Manual rotation is separate from auto-rotation during sorting.

Rotate a held item with Q or E

  1. Click and drag the item so it stays held rather than merely hovered.
  2. Press E to rotate clockwise or Q to rotate counter-clockwise, following the documented keyboard mapping.
  3. Place the item when it fits the inventory space you want to use.

The current Controls and Options reference lists E for clockwise rotation and Q for counter-clockwise rotation. The November water walkthrough independently demonstrates Q/E while moving an item. These sources support the practical rotation step without claiming that every installation has unchanged defaults. Controls reference · Recorded rotation, 8:00–8:02

Check the interaction before changing the shortcut

First confirm the item is held. The written procedure describes rotation while the item is being dragged, not while the cursor merely hovers over it. Pick it up, try the rotation input and only then place it in the grid. Held-item procedure · Held-item demonstration, 7:50–8:05

If the documented keyboard mapping does not match your setup, compare it with your configured bindings before retrying. Keep the input context in mind: rotating a held item, opening a grid's sorting menu and letting sorting rotate items are separate operations. The table below distinguishes them rather than treating every orientation problem as the same shortcut failure.

Keep older mouse instructions in context

Demo-era Update 049 documents mouse-wheel up/down and middle click as rotation and flipping inputs for dragged items. The November recording instead demonstrates Q/E rotation and right-click flipping. Use the corroborated Q/E rotation sequence above as a starting point, but follow your own configured mapping for flipping rather than assuming a recording establishes a universal default. Sorting does not turn items automaticallyManual rotation and sorting auto-rotation are different; 1.0.0.5 sets sorting auto-rotation Off by default for new players.

The group and sorting operations are documented by Update 049 and the inventory guide. The sorting default comes from the official 1.0.0.5 notes, not an undated assumption about your installation.

Move several items and transfer between tabs

Drag a selection box around several items to move the group. Hold Shift while dragging to place the selection precisely in another inventory. This lets you handle a group without treating each item as a separate transfer. Official group controls · Group movement guidance

Since hotfix 1.0.0.5, dragging a single item onto a storage-bay tab transfers it to that tab, matching the existing group-transfer behavior. Use that action when the destination is another storage tab rather than another position inside the current grid. It transfers the item; rotating it is a separate decision. Separate sorting from manual rotation

Right-click an inventory grid to open its context menu and access sorting options. Do this as a grid interaction, not while trying to flip an item held on the cursor. The inventory guide describes the sorting menu separately from its held-item rotation instructions. Sorting procedure

Hotfix 1.0.0.5 explicitly sets auto-rotate while sorting to Off by default for new players. That is the documented release-patch default used here; it does not mean manual Q/E rotation is disabled. Check the actual sorting option if you want sorting to turn items, especially on an existing or customized setup. Official sorting-default change · Sorting-option explanation

Useful documented shortcuts

Update 049 introduces Toolbox slots 1–9 for equipping the corresponding tools and says Jackson sells the Toolbox after day 14. Keep that availability claim tied to its historical source rather than assuming it describes every starting setup. See Jackson access and shopping before planning a trip. Hotfix 1.0.0.5 adds the rebindable Call next customer (Bell) action, B by default. Holding it dismisses the current customer. Version 1.0.0.6 adds an additional Menu / Back binding with the same actions as Esc. Bell action · Menu / Back binding

Inventory questions

Why does scrolling over an item not rotate it?

The historical mouse instructions apply while the item is actively dragged. Hovering is not the operation those instructions describe. Hold the item first, then use the rotation binding that matches your setup. Dragged-item update · Held-item explanation

Does turning off sorting auto-rotation stop Q/E rotation?

No: the documented sorting option concerns automatic orientation changes during sorting, while Q/E rotates a held item manually. Test manual rotation with an item attached to the cursor rather than judging it by what a sorting command does. Manual keyboard mapping · Sorting-option distinction

How do I move one item into another storage tab?

On the behavior documented since 1.0.0.5, drag the item onto the destination storage-bay tab. The patch extends that transfer behavior to individual items as well as selected groups. It is not necessary to treat the tab transfer as an item-rotation command. Official single-item transfer fix

Scope

Q/E rotation is supported by the controls reference and recorded gameplay; older mouse mappings and Toolbox availability retain their historical context. Sorting auto-rotation uses the official 1.0.0.5 new-player default, not a claim about saved preferences on every installation. This page covers inventory handling, not appliance upgrades or save restoration. Sources checked November 2, 2026.
